Nitish Kumar takes charge again: Here’s what his pay structure looks like

Nitish Kumar, sworn in as Bihar CM, will reportedly receive ₹2.5 lakh per month including allowances. His past MLA and MP pensions take his total benefits to over ₹2 lakh.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who took oath again on Thursday in the presence of senior NDA leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, will reportedly receive a monthly package of ₹2.5 lakh. The figure includes not just his base pay but also housing, office, security, and other legislator-related benefits.

As per a report by Moneycontrol, before resuming office, Nitish Kumar served multiple terms as an MLA, MP, and a Union Minister. As per his asset declaration on 31 December 2024, his net worth stood at approximately ₹1.64 crore. The report also noted he had ₹21,052 in cash and around ₹60,811 in bank deposits. He owns 13 cows and 10 calves and drives a Ford EcoSport.

Lawmakers’ pensions and other benefits

Nitish Kumar is qualified for a legislator's pension in addition to his Chief Minister income. His pension is ₹45,000 as per pension regulations, which is connected to his first term as an MLA in 1985. According to the same article, his total lawmaker pension has increased over time to ₹1.38 lakh, and when his MP pension is added, his complete pension package comes to a total of ₹2.03 lakh.

In contrast, Bihar MLAs typically earn between ₹1.4 and 1.5 lakh in a month. A basic pay of ₹50,000, with a constituency allowance of ₹55,000, ₹40,000 for a personal assistant, ₹15,000 for stationery and a day allowance of ₹3,000 for attending assembly or committee sessions are all included in this. Additionally, Moneycontrol notes that states like Maharashtra and Telangana pay their lawmakers similar monthly salaries.
