In the new season of The Family Man, Nimrat Kaur plays one of the show’s most detailed and morally complicated villains — a role she says was not written for a woman at first.

In a fun interview with SCREEN, along with the cast and creators, Nimrat said that the character Mira, who is strong and completely ruthless, was originally meant to be a man before the makers changed the gender.

Because of this change, the role became more layered and interesting for her to perform.

"Mira is a very unachievable woman for me at a personal and professional level. You will never find yourself in the world she lives in or with the kind of people she deals with," Nimrat said. She also shared that after learning the role was first written for a man, many of Mira’s traits made more sense to her.

"They had written this part keeping a man in mind. That's why, while performing it, I kept thinking she really thinks like a guy would. She is clear-headed about decisions, without bringing in your feminine instincts. She is cut-throat, ruthless, unapologetic - and I mean that as a compliment to men who make quick decisions without emotionality or personal biases," the actress added.

For her, this lack of emotion makes the character exciting to play. "She is an enviable character for an actor. She is a sinful, guilty pleasure to play," she said with a smile.

When asked why the makers changed the role from male to female, director and co-writer Tushar Hiranandani said, "Because it's boring." He explained that Samantha’s character in Season 2 was also written for a man at first. Changing the gender made the story feel new again. "It's the same character, but instead of a man, it's a woman - and the dynamic becomes fresh."

Actor Jaideep Ahlawat agreed and said, "All dynamics change." DK added that the role becomes even more powerful when a woman plays it. "It makes it way more compelling than seeing a man do it."

Nimrat ended by saying, "It is also more unexpected."

The Family Man Season 3 released on Amazon Prime Video on Friday, November 21, 2025, at 12 AM IST.
