Constitution Day, also referred to as Samvidhan Divas, is celebrated each year on November 26 to commemorate the adoption of the Indian Constitution. On this day in 1949, the Constituent Assembly formally adopted the Constitution, laying the foundation for India as a sovereign, democratic republic. Two months later, on January 26, 1950, the Constitution came into effect, a date now celebrated as Republic Day. The choice of January 26 was symbolic as it coincided with the 1930 declaration of the Congress's Poorna Swaraj resolution.

Remembering the Father of the Constitution

The 125th birth anniversary of Dr B.R. Ambedkar, who is commonly known as the chief architect of the Constitution, was commemorated by declaring November 26 as Constitution Day by the Indian government in 2015 under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. "The Constitution is not a mere lawyer's document; it is a vehicle of life, and its spirit is always the spirit of the age," said Dr Ambedkar. Till 2015, the day was marked as Law Day, with most activities related to legal awareness.

Constitution Day is not merely a formal observance; it is celebrated as a national festival of constitutional values.

PM Modi’s message on Constitution Day

On Constitution Day 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X (Twitter) to pay tribute to the framers of the Constitution. He wrote, “On Constitution Day, we pay tribute to the framers of our Constitution. Their vision and foresight continue to motivate us in our pursuit of building a Viksit Bharat.”

He further added, “Our Constitution gives utmost importance to human dignity, equality and liberty. While it empowers us with rights, it also reminds us of our duties as citizens, which we should always try to fulfil. These duties are the foundation of a strong democracy. Let us reiterate our commitment to strengthening Constitutional values through our actions.”
