The Centre is exploring the possibility of involving the Indian Air Force in transporting question papers for the upcoming NEET-UG 2026 re-test, as authorities move to tighten security following the cancellation of the original examination over an alleged paper leak.

A high-level meeting was recently held at the residence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to discuss the proposal. The meeting was also attended by Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, and senior Air Force officials.

The NEET-UG re-test is scheduled to be conducted on June 21 after the original exam, held on May 3 for more than 22 lakh students, was scrapped amid allegations of organised malpractice and insider involvement.

IAF may replace the traditional transport system

According to The Hindu, officials said the proposed plan would involve the Air Force managing logistics support to securely transport examination papers from printing presses to centres across the country.

Currently, question papers are distributed primarily through the postal network, which involves multiple transit and handling points. Authorities believe this process may increase the risk of leaks and unauthorised access.

Under the proposed mechanism, the use of defence-backed logistics is expected to significantly strengthen security and minimise human intervention during transportation.

Sources indicated that the proposal is still under consideration, and a final decision is likely after consultations with the Prime Minister’s Office.

Government seeks tighter security after controversy

According to The Hindu, the move comes after intense criticism surrounding the conduct of NEET-UG 2026, one of India’s largest entrance examinations.

The National Testing Agency cancelled the examination on May 12 following allegations that the paper had been leaked before the test.

The controversy triggered widespread protests from students and parents, with demands for stricter safeguards and accountability.

CBI investigation continues

According to The Hindu, the case is currently being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation, which has already arrested 11 people from multiple states, including Delhi, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.

Investigators are probing the suspected involvement of organised networks and possible insider assistance linked to the leak.

Officials said discussions are ongoing between examination authorities and defence agencies to assess the operational feasibility of the proposed transport plan before final approval is granted.
