The Indian Air Force has operationalised Nyoma Airbase in eastern Ladakh, making it the highest fighter airbase in the world. The facility, situated at 13,700 feet, heralds a major boost in India's capabilities along the northern frontier.

High-Altitude landing marks the start
The airbase was inaugurated by Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, who landed a C-130J Super Hercules on the newly prepared runway. He was joined by Air Marshal Jeetendra Mishra, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Western Air Command.
Built by the BRO, the runway is 2.7 kilometres long and built to operate under extreme Himalayan conditions, including temperatures dropping to -40°C. The strip can handle large transport aircraft such as the C-17 Globemaster III, IL-76, and front-line fighters like Rafale, Su-30MKI, and MiG-29UPG.
Infrastructure built for extreme conditions
According to a report by the Aviation A2Z, hardened aircraft shelters, high-altitude fuel storage, precision navigation equipment, and upgraded air traffic control systems are part of Nyoma. These enable operations to be carried out unhindered despite the harsh terrain and seasonal isolation.
It is also connected to other forward airstrips at Daulat Beg Oldi, Fukche, and Chushul, bolstering air mobility and support along the Line of Actual Control.
Strategic importance in eastern Ladakh
As per the report by Aviation A2Z, the location of Nyoma, close to sensitive sectors, which saw a ramp-up of tensions during the 2020 stand-off, allows India faster mobilisation and enhanced surveillance. The new facility further supports the Army's reach across key points along the LAC, as patrolling was restored in Demchok and Depsang during 2024.
Beyond combat roles, Nyoma will serve as a logistics and ISR hub, housing UAVs, aircraft-based monitoring, and space-linked surveillance. Strengthened radar and sensor coverage will also contribute to early-warning systems in the region.

Strengthening India's deterrence
As per the report, commissioning Nyoma Airbase underlines preparedness on the part of India to operate in one of the most challenging high-altitude theatres anywhere in the world. Supported by improved road and tunnel networks, the airbase permits quicker deployment of troops and equipment whenever required. It significantly enhances India’s strategic posture in Ladakh by reinforcing air power, mobility, and intelligence capability on the northern border.
