The wait for the southwest monsoon is set to continue in Mumbai, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicating that widespread rainfall across Maharashtra is unlikely over the next few days. Weather models suggest monsoon activity could strengthen only after June 24, while hot and humid conditions are expected to persist across the city and adjoining districts.

The IMD has extended a yellow alert for heat and humidity in Mumbai until June 19, warning that temperatures are likely to remain above normal despite isolated pre-monsoon showers. According to the weather agency, rainfall across most parts of Maharashtra is expected to remain scattered over the next four to five days.

Why has the monsoon slowed down?

According to IMD meteorologists, the delay has been caused by a combination of unfavourable atmospheric conditions. These include the absence of a strong monsoon surge, weakened monsoon circulation, and the lack of supportive weather systems such as cyclonic circulations and offshore troughs. Large-scale climate patterns, including the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), have also not been favourable for monsoon advancement.

The southwest monsoon usually reaches Maharashtra around June 11. While it advanced rapidly from Kerala and entered parts of south Maharashtra by June 8, its progress weakened soon afterwards, slowing further movement towards Mumbai and surrounding regions.

The IMD said it is closely monitoring prevailing weather conditions and expects rainfall activity to increase over the Konkan region after June 24.

Heat and humidity add to discomfort

With the monsoon yet to establish itself, Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad are expected to experience continued hot and humid weather. Forecasts indicate maximum temperatures could cross 35 degree Celsius in Mumbai, while some parts of Thane may see temperatures exceeding 36 degrees Celsius.

On Wednesday, the Colaba observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 35.8C, more than four degrees above normal, while the Santacruz station reported 34.8C. The elevated temperatures came despite light pre-monsoon showers in parts of the city.

Mumbai’s rainfall figures also remain significantly below normal. Santacruz has recorded only 12.9 mm of rainfall so far this month, while Colaba has received 4.3 mm. In comparison, the city typically receives around 526 mm of rainfall during June.

With monsoon activity expected to remain subdued for several more days, residents are likely to face continued heat and humidity before more widespread rainfall arrives later this month.
