‘No double standards, no compromise’: PM Modi delivers strong message on terrorism in Malaysia

From a tough message on terrorism to expanding defence and technology ties, PM Modi’s Malaysia visit signals a sharper strategic partnership.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday made a strong statement on India’s stance against terrorism, saying that there can be no ambiguity or double standards in dealing with the global challenge. While speaking in Malaysia after holding bilateral talks with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, PM Modi said that the fight against terrorism means “no double standards, no compromise.”

Firm stand on security and defence cooperation

Highlighting India’s clear stance on the issue, Modi said that the fight against terrorism demands clarity and a united response. The two leaders held talks on how to further enhance defence and security cooperation. PM Modi said, “We will also make defence cooperation more comprehensive.”

India and Malaysia on Sunday announced a series of initiatives to further enhance cooperation in the defence, security, and strategic fields.

Beyond security, the two leaders held talks on how to further enhance cooperation in emerging and strategic areas. Modi said, “Along with AI and digital technologies, we will advance partnerships in semiconductors, health, and food security.”

India’s vision for the Indo-Pacific

Developing a broader regional context, Modi emphasised the centrality of the Indo-Pacific in the global economy. “The Indo-Pacific region is emerging as the growth engine of the world”, Modi said, adding that India’s commitment to development, peace, and stability in the Indo-Pacific is hand-in-hand with ASEAN.

A relationship rooted in history and people-to-people ties

Calling India–Malaysia ties a “special relationship,” Modi highlighted historical and cultural ties. He further stated, “India and Malaysia share a special relationship. We are maritime neighbours. For centuries, our people have had deep and affectionate ties.”

In the context of the Indian diaspora, Modi said, “Today, Malaysia is the second largest country in the world with a population of Indian origin. Our civilisations, shared cultural heritage and democratic values bind us together.”

Ceremonial welcome in Kuala Lumpur

PM’s plane touched down in Kuala Lumpur Saturday morning to a red-carpet reception, where Prime Minister Ibrahim personally received him at the airport. Then, on Sunday morning, Narendra Modi was accorded a ceremonial reception at Perdana Putra ahead of formal talks.

Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia, said that bilateral cooperation is expanding to cover trade, investment, connectivity, and defence issues, as well as recognising India's “spectacular rise” in the global economy.
