A severe cold wave has swept across northern, eastern, and northeastern India. Several state governments have declared the temporary closures of schools to protect students from extreme temperatures and dense fog. Reportedly, the authorities are closely monitoring weather conditions, with updates issued regularly to ensure student safety.

Delhi and Haryana

In Delhi, the Directorate of Education has declared that winter vacations for the academic year 2025–26 will take place from 1 to 15 January 2026. This information was previously outlined in a notice issued in November 2025.

Uttar Pradesh

Several districts in Uttar Pradesh have ordered the closure of schools up to Class 8 due to the ongoing cold wave and dense fog. In some areas, closures have been extended until 14 January 2026. This includes districts in the National Capital Region (NCR) such as Noida and Ghaziabad, where extreme cold poses risks to student safety.

The Lucknow District Magistrate has mentioned specifically about the closure of schools until 8 January 2026, aligning with the winter break schedule.

Tripura

The Tripura government has declared the closure of all government, aided, and private schools from 6 to 10 January 2026. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), temperatures in the state have fallen 4–6°C below normal, with heavy fog expected during the night and early morning hours.

Bihar

In Bihar, the authorities have temporarily ordered the closure of schools in multiple districts due to falling temperatures, particularly during early mornings. Schools are advised to strictly follow district-level advisories before resuming normal schedules.
