'Risks don't end once tremors stop'

While the jolts lasted only a short while, experts caution that the risk does not end once tremors stop. Aftershocks may follow hours, days or even weeks later and can weaken already damaged structures. Residents are advised to remain alert and avoid entering buildings that show visible cracks or structural damage.

Safety officials recommend avoiding the use of open flames inside buildings immediately after an earthquake, as gas pipelines may have been affected. Lighters, matches, or electrical sparks could trigger fires if leaks are present. Those living near coastal areas should also stay away from beaches, as seismic activity can occasionally lead to sudden flooding or tsunami-like conditions.

Narrow lanes increase risk

Kolkata’s dense urban layout adds another layer of concern. The city’s ageing buildings, narrow lanes, hanging signboards, cornices and glass facades increase the chances of injury from falling debris. People should avoid standing near electric poles, tram wires, flyovers and bridges until authorities confirm they are safe.

After returning home, residents should carefully inspect walls and ceilings for cracks and check for signs of structural stress. Wearing sturdy shoes indoors is advisable to prevent injuries from broken glass or debris. Keeping a torch, charged power bank and an emergency kit within reach can prove useful if power outages occur.

It is equally important to check essential utilities. Inspect water pipelines for leaks or displacement caused by ground movement. Electricity wiring, MCB panels and gas cylinder connections should be examined promptly, as unnoticed damage can pose serious safety risks in the hours following an earthquake.
