Strong earthquake tremors were felt across Kolkata at 1:23 pm on Friday, prompting many residents to rush out of their homes in panic. The quake measured 5 on the Richter scale and shook parts of the city in quick succession.

“I was watching TV when the tremor happened, and the entire room started jolting badly,” said Riya, a resident of South Kolkata, recalling the sudden shock that left her startled as the tremors rippled through the area.

"We were sitting in the Jadavpur University departmental library when the earthquake hit. It felt like a serious threat to life, considering I was experiencing such an earthquake for the first time", said Fazle Wakil, a research scholar at Jadavpur University.

Even the office space of News Ei Samay was rattled by the tremors today. "I suddenly felt a strong jolt while working at office. The wheels of my chair began shaking noticeably and I immediately realised it was an earthquake. The experience was very unsettling and gave me goosebumps," Trisha Katyayan of News Ei Samay told the journalist filing the report.

Popular photographer and influencer Sammya Brata also shared an update on Facebook, "This was quite a strong Earthquake."

Phone notifications that read earthquake alerts have flooded WhatsApp statuses and social media, with thousands in Kolkata panicking at the sudden tremors.

What to do after an earthquake

The danger does not end once the shaking stops. In fact, the period immediately after an earthquake can be just as risky. Here’s what you should keep in mind:

1. Be prepared for aftershocks

Aftershocks can occur hours, days, or even weeks after the main quake. These secondary tremors may be strong enough to cause further structural damage and dislodge already weakened debris.

Stay alert and move to a safe, open area if tremors resume.

Avoid re-entering damaged buildings until authorities declare them safe.

2. Avoid fire hazards

Earthquakes can rupture gas pipelines and damage electrical wiring.

Do not use lighters, matches, candles, or any open flames inside damaged buildings.

If you smell gas, leave the area immediately and inform authorities.

Switch off the main gas and electricity supply if it is safe to do so.

3. Stay away from coastal areas

If you live near the coast, avoid going to the beach or waterfront.

Earthquakes can trigger tsunamis or sudden flooding.

Follow official advisories and evacuation instructions if issued.

4. Drive with extreme caution

Road conditions may be compromised after a quake.

Structural damage, fallen debris, and non-functional traffic signals can make driving dangerous.

Plan alternative routes and avoid bridges or flyovers unless confirmed safe.

5. Special precautions for Kolkata

Kolkata has many old buildings, heritage structures, and narrow lanes, which increase post-earthquake risks.

Avoid entering old or visibly cracked buildings.

Stay clear of falling signboards, cornices, loose plaster, and shattered glass.

Do not stand near electric poles, tram wires, or hanging cables.

Be cautious while using flyovers and bridges, as structural stress may not be immediately visible.

Avoid crowded markets or congested lanes where evacuation may be difficult.

6. Check on others

Ensure family members, neighbours, elderly residents, and children are safe.

Provide first aid if necessary and call emergency services for serious injuries.

7. Follow official updates

Rely only on verified information from government authorities or disaster management agencies.

Avoid spreading unverified rumours on social media.

Staying calm, alert, and cautious after an earthquake can significantly reduce the risk of injury and further harm.
