The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement on Sunday that the recent developments in Venezuela are a matter of 'deep concern'. The Indian foreign ministry has released the statement following the surprise attack by the United States military in the Venezuelan capital of Caracas, in which they captured the country's long-serving President Nicolas Maduro, along with his wife Cilia Flores. The MEA has said that India is closely monitoring the evolving situation.

What happened in Venezuela

After a long-drawn passive confrontation laced with threats and sanctions, the Donald Trump administration launched a full-scale attack on the South American nation. Caracas was bombed by US helicopters, and President Maduro and the first lady were captured and taken into custody by the forces.

Nicolas Maduro has been extradited from Venezuela and is currently being housed in a DEA facility at the agency's headquarters in New York. President Trump had commented that the US is going to run the country until stability returns, and there is a legal transition of power. However, the Supreme Court of Venezuela has appointed Vice-President Delcy Rodriguez as the interim head of the government, and not removed Nicolas Maduro from his position.

The statement added, "India reaffirms its support to the well-being and safety of the people of Venezuela.
