During winter, migratory birds from different corners of the world flock to various regions of India. Tourists and bird experts gather there to spot these rare and unfamiliar species. One such lesser-known destination is Borong, a quiet village near Ravangla at the foothills of Menam Hills in South Sikkim. It’s a peaceful, scenic spot where you can spend a few relaxing days during the winter break, with the added delight of birdwatching.

Borong, 17 km from Ravangla, is an ideal offbeat destination for birding. As many as 200 species of birds are found in this area. At an altitude of about 5,800 ft, the village remains virgin to tourist inflow. Snow-capped Himalayan peaks, vibrant rhododendrons, hot springs, the Ralong Monastery, the Maenam Sanctuary — there’s much to admire, and above all, an overwhelming sense of calm.
How to get there?
Borong is accessible by road, air, or rail. The nearest airport is at Bagdogra, from where it takes about five hours to reach the village. The distance is roughly 144 km.
The scenic beauty of Darjeeling can also be approached by road from Kolkata, a distance of about 700 km. The journey would take a day and a half with stops along the way.
Travelling by train is comparatively easier. From Sealdah, take a train to New Jalpaiguri. From there, travelling via Ravangla to reach Borong will take close to five hours.
Best time to visit
Borong wears a different look in different seasons. If one wants to see the valley in its full bloom, the ideal time would be from April to June. It changes its topography once again during the monsoon, starting from July till September, as colours are spread all over the valley. October to March is the ideal time for trekking and hiking with clear views of the snow-laden Himalayas.

Where to stay?
Since Borong has not yet been recognised as a major tourist destination, there are limited numbers of accommodations. You are not going to find those flashy hotels or luxury resorts; however, you will definitely find simple and comfortable eco-stays and homestays. Also, booking usually helps. The warmth and hospitality of local people make the stay even more pleasant.
