Maenam Hills hiking is quite popular in this region, but the trail still sees very few tourists.
Ravangla is not an unfamiliar destination for most Bengalis. It is one of Sikkim’s most popular tourist spots. But did you know that just near Ravangla lies a hidden sanctuary you can explore on foot in just two days? Many say it is the “hidden gem” of Sikkim. The place is called Maenam Hills, a region wrapped in dense trees, wildflowers, birds, and diverse species of flora and fauna.

Located in the Namchi district of South Sikkim, the Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary spans around 35 sq km and sits at an altitude of about 3,150 metres. Its biodiversity is similar to other forests of Sikkim. However, Maenam is easily accessible to trekkers. The Maenam Hills hike is quite popular, but the trail remains relatively quiet and crowd-free.
Maenam forest is home to a variety of medicinal plants, along with rhododendron and orchid species. Red pandas are also known to roam this forest. From the Maenam Hilltop, you can view the Sleeping Buddha formation, along with serene views of Mount Kanchenjunga and Mount Kabru. Except for the monsoon, you can trek Maenam Hills any time of the year.
How to explore Maenam Hills?
The trek begins from Ravangla. It takes about 5 to 7 hours to reach the Maenam Hilltop, covering approximately 11 km. The duration depends on your fitness level. You will need to camp overnight at Maenam Hills. On the second day, reach Maenam Gompa early in the morning to catch the sunrise. Then trek down to Ravangla. Including travel to and from Ravangla, the entire Maenam Hills circuit can be completed in just four days.

How to reach?
From New Jalpaiguri (NJP), take a direct vehicle to Ravangla, the journey takes around 5.5 hours. Ravangla has plenty of homestays and hotels. From there, you must trek to Maenam Hills and camp overnight in tents. Hiring a guide for this trek is essential.
