Although winter can be a period of despair due to the cold weather and lack of sunlight, winter is also a period that adds colour to our hearts. Winter is a period of leaf fall; people tend to fall in love more during this period. The truth is that winter makes the mind look for warmth to overcome the winter blues or loneliness. This is the reason why winter has a special status in the field of dating. When it is cold outside, people’s hearts tend to search for a partner. This is the reason why in the field of dating, winter is called “cuffing season.”

There could be several reasons for this effect of 'cuffing season' on humans:

A dating app survey reveals that from late November to mid-February, people are more likely to be in romantic relationships. Winter weather impacts both the physiological and psychological sides of the body. It gets dark earlier, or there are fewer sun hours. Additionally, it becomes cold. These aspects lead to an imbalance of serotonin and melatonin in humans. Due to this imbalance, people suffer from irritable moods. Thus, one can feel depressed and lonely, an illness commonly known by its name: Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Many individuals consider dating during this period to cope with the winter blues.

Cuffing season relationships may fall apart quickly

The winter season gives an impression of being cosy, and sharing such experiences with a partner is even more delightful. To begin with, all aspects of life, such as spending time together and learning about each other, begin to feel very romantic. However, once past the winter season, things can go awry in a relationship. Enjoying the warming effect of the sun during winter or seeing the glow of Christmas lights can make romantic love very pleasant; however, casual dating during this time can go sour, say relationship experts.

Why do cuffing season relationships turn toxic?

A mood of low happiness prevails during this time of the year. To overcome loneliness, individuals look for companions. This is where the problem lies. While the end of winter approaches, loneliness also decreases, say specialists. Someone perfect for a couple of months will start to appear not so compatible anymore. This is why relationships during the cuffing season don’t work for long, and one should not involve themselves in casual dating during this time.

How to avoid these problems?

A relationship should not begin without knowing yourself first. Do not engage in a relationship because you experience loneliness. Know your needs and wants so that the relationship will not become dull because you change with the seasons. During the winter season, SAD and winter blues often happen. Taking care of yourself first is very important. A relationship should only begin after you have overcome those feelings.
