Death of King Carloman

December 4, 1771, marks the death of King Carloman I. This incident left Charlemagne as the sole ruler of the Frankish Kingdom. It led to the strengthening of what later came to be known as the Carolingian empire. The three-year-old Ivan IV was named the Grand Prince of Moscow in 1533, beginning the path to his rule, which was later named Ivan the Terrible.

The birth of The Observer

The Observer was first published in Britain on December 4th, 1791. It is often referred to as the oldest Sunday newspaper in the world. It was acquired by the Guardian Media Group in the year 1993.

Abolition of Sati

A key social reform was laid down on December 4, 1829, when the Governor-General Lord William Bentinck laid down a regulation abolishing the evil practice of Sati in Bengal. He declared that those who practice it will be recognised as culpable homicide, which led to a turning point in the colonial and social landscape of India.

Constitution and culture

China adopted its current constitution on December 4, 1982, shaping the modern, legal and political framework of the People’s Republic of China. The date is also known for Pan American World Airways ceasing its operations on December 4, 1991. It marked an end to the pioneering era of International Air Travel.
