Jabalpur, in central India, is a peaceful yet awe-filled city. Built around the Narmada River, it offers water, marble canyons, history and quiet adventure. This winter, you can take a short getaway to this stunning destination. Here are four reasons why Jabalpur deserves a spot on your travel list.
Some call it Jabalpur, some call it Jabbalpur. The word ‘jabal’ in Arabic means rock. Legend says that sage Jabali meditated on the banks of the Narmada here, which is how the city got its name.
You can travel to Jabalpur easily by train from Howrah or Sealdah. Being a major city, there’s no shortage of transport or hotels. Visit by train, flight or road whichever suits you.

What to see in Jabalpur?
Marble Rocks (Marble rock canyon) – Bhedaghat
One of Jabalpur’s top attractions. Towering marble cliffs rise on both sides while the Narmada flows quietly in between. With sunlight on the rocks, the view looks magical.
A boat ride is a must. Spread across an 8-km gorge, the marble walls appear in shades of milk white, pink and yellow. Multiple Hindi films have been shot here, including the iconic scene from Asoka featuring Shah Rukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor.
To truly enjoy its beauty, visit twice:
Once in the morning, and once on a full-moon night, when the moonlight glides over the white marble and reflects on the Narmada. The sight is unbelievable.
Dhuandhar Waterfall
Another gem of Jabalpur. Water plunges 30 metres with such force that the mist makes the entire area look smoke-filled — hence the name Dhuandhar.
For a breathtaking bird’s-eye view, take the ropeway.
Madan Mahal Fort
Beyond natural beauty, Jabalpur is steeped in history. Visit Madan Mahal Fort, perched on a hill, it still echoes tales of Queen Rani Durgavati’s bravery. After a short forest climb, you’ll reach the top, where the entire city opens up like a painted canvas.
