In Hinduism, the rudraksha tree holds immense significance. Various Ayurvedic medicines are prepared using this tree. The seeds of this tree are known as rudraksha. Though commonly found in the Himalayan region, Indonesia and Nepal, with proper care, a rudraksha tree can also be grown at home. How can you grow a rudraksha tree at home?

Select the Right Seeds

Rudraksha seeds are the foundation for healthy plant growth. Therefore, selecting the right seeds is important. Buy fresh and good-quality rudraksha seeds. Before purchasing seeds, check whether they sink in water. Seeds that float are infertile in nature. Before planting, soak these seeds in lukewarm water for 24-48 hours. This softens the outer shell and increases the chances of germination.

When is the Ideal Time

The ideal temperature for rudraksha tree growth is 20 to 30 degrees Celsius, which is suitable for areas with moderate to high humidity. Loamy soil is most suitable for rudraksha trees. Harsh sunlight is not always good. However, keeping it in the shade won't work either. Therefore, place the plant in a location where it receives 4-5 hours of sunlight daily. That will suffice.

Seed Planting

Once the seeds are ready, plant them in a pot filled with nutrient-rich soil mixed with fertiliser. Plant the seeds about 1-2 inches deep in the soil. Keep the soil moist but ensure water doesn't accumulate. Excess water can cause rotting. Germination usually takes 1-2 months, so be patient.

Seedlings

After the seedlings grow to about 6-12 inches tall, you can transplant them to a larger pot or directly into the ground. Rudraksha trees can grow up to 50-80 feet in height. Therefore, plant the seedlings in a suitable location with adequate space.

Maintenance

Proper watering is essential for the healthy growth of rudraksha trees. Water the plant regularly, especially during the initial growth phase. However, be careful not to overwater as this can be harmful and may cause root rot. You can spread mulching soil around the base of the tree. This helps retain moisture and prevents weed growth. Applying organic fertiliser at regular intervals accelerates the plant's development.

Flowering and Fruiting

A rudraksha tree typically starts flowering after 3-4 years of growth. It produces small, white flowers, which eventually turn into blue rudraksha fruits. The seeds inside these fruits are the rudraksha beads. After this, the rudraksha is obtained by removing the pulp from the ripe fruit.
