The Indian team, in recent times, has been facing a spate of injuries. During the ODI series against Australia, Shreyas Iyer suffered a serious injury while trying to take a catch, even requiring admission to the ICU. Now, Test captain Shubman Gill has given Indian cricket lovers fresh cause for concern. Multiple news reports say he had to be admitted to the hospital. While batting against South Africa in the first Test at Eden Gardens on Wednesday, Gill felt a sharp pull in the muscles of his neck. After facing a mere three deliveries, he was compelled to walk off the field and did not return to bat. According to sources, an ambulance was called in the evening to take him to the hospital.

Why was Shubman taken to the hospital?
Shubman strained his neck muscles while attempting a slog sweep off South African spinner Simon Harmer. The team physio rushed to him immediately, and he had to leave the field. Later, the BCCI said Gill was suffering from a neck spasm and was under medical observation.
Reports suggest his condition worsened in the evening, though. He was hoisted onto a stretcher and into an ambulance, his neck supported with a cervical collar. He was taken to a private hospital and will be kept there overnight.

Speculation is growing over how serious Gill's injury might be. Bowling coach Morne Morkel had this to say: “We need to understand how the neck strain happened. Whether it was due to workload or lack of proper sleep, that needs to be assessed. Gill is usually very fit, but he woke up today with stiffness in the neck and still went on to play.” First Test may get over by Day 3, say experts, but the bigger worry now is whether Gill would be available for the rest of the series.
