Sourav Ganguly has strongly supported Mohammed Shami’s return to the Indian team, stating that the veteran pacer still has plenty to offer. Speaking during IPL 2026, Ganguly emphasised that Shami’s experience and current form make him a valuable asset. He believes Shami should be considered for India’s playing XI, especially as a new-ball partner to Jasprit Bumrah. According to Ganguly, a bowler of Shami’s quality cannot be overlooked.
IPL form makes a strong statement
Shami has been in impressive form in IPL 2026, delivering impactful performances for his team. One of his standout spells came when he picked up two early wickets while conceding very few runs, setting the tone for his side. Ganguly said in the Bengal Pro T20 League ceremony, "I still believe he should play for India. Hopefully, his time will come again because he's that good. When the ball comes out with that upright seam, it's a treat to watch.”

"He looks fit and sharp. After bowling consistently for months, you naturally reach peak conditions – no amount of training matches that. I wish him all the best and would love to see him back in India colours," Ganguly added.
Consistency across formats
Apart from IPL success, Shami has also performed well in domestic cricket. Playing in the Ranji Trophy, he delivered crucial performances, including a match-defining spell in the knockout stages. These performances highlight his consistency and determination. Despite being out of the national side, Shami has continued to work hard and deliver results.

Shami’s current form has raised questions about his absence from the Indian team. Ganguly’s remarks have added weight to the argument that experienced players should not be ignored. With India looking to build a balanced pace attack, Shami’s return could bring both stability and experience alongside Bumrah.
Shami’s performances have reignited the conversation around his comeback, and with strong backing from Ganguly, the spotlight is now firmly on the selectors.
