Team India has been hit by a major setback even before recovering from the shock of their defeat to New Zealand in the second ODI at Rajkot. Star all-rounder Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the remainder of the ODI series and will also miss the upcoming five-match T20 series against the Kiwis.
India is currently playing a three-match ODI series against New Zealand, and injury troubles have continued to mount. Before Sundar, wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant was already ruled out due to injury. However, Sundar's absence is seen as a bigger blow, as he plays a key role in maintaining the team's balance with both bat and ball.
Washington Sundar's injury raises World Cup concerns
Washington Sundar suffered a side strain while bowling during New Zealand's innings in the first ODI at Baroda. Because of the injury, he could bowl only five overs and later appeared to be in visible discomfort while batting. On January 12, the BCCI officially confirmed that he had been ruled out of the remaining ODI matches.
It has now emerged that the injury is more serious than initially expected, and Sundar will also miss the T20 series against New Zealand, which begins on January 21 in Nagpur. This development is a major concern for Team India, especially with the T20 World Cup 2026 approaching. Sundar is considered an important part of India's T20 plans due to his ability to contribute as a hard-hitting lower-order batsman and a reliable off-spinner.

In the first ODI, Sundar conceded 27 runs without taking a wicket before leaving the field. Nitish Kumar Reddy came on as a substitute fielder. Sundar later returned to bat and remained unbeaten on 7, but struggled while running between the wickets. After the match, captain Shubman Gill confirmed that Sundar was dealing with a side strain and said further updates would be shared after scans.
India's injury woes continue
Washington Sundar's injury adds to India's growing list of fitness concerns. Rishabh Pant has already been ruled out of the ODI series due to injury. Meanwhile, young batter Tilak Varma will miss the first three T20 matches after undergoing surgery for a groin injury.
