The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has confirmed that the Indian Football League (IFL) 2026-27 season will begin on October 16, 2026. The decision was taken during the IFL Governing Council meeting at the Football House in New Delhi, where representatives from 10 of the league’s 11 clubs met to discuss preparations for the upcoming campaign. Along with confirming the start date, the AIFF announced key decisions on player regulations, youth development and the league’s long-term roadmap.

When will the season begin?

The Indian Football League 2026-27 will kick off on October 16, 2026.

The early confirmation is expected to give clubs sufficient time to complete squad planning, pre-season training and other operational preparations before the new campaign gets underway.

Which clubs will compete?

The upcoming season is expected to feature 11 clubs: Aizawl FC, FC Bengaluru United, Chanmari FC, Delhi FC, Dempo SC, Gokulam Kerala FC, Mohammedan Sporting Club, Rajasthan United FC, Real Kashmir FC, Shillong Lajong FC and Sreenidi Deccan FC.

New foreign player rule

A major change for the 2026-27 season is the revised foreign player regulation. Clubs will now be allowed to field a maximum of three foreign players in their starting XI. The AIFF said the decision has been taken to ensure more playing opportunities for Indian footballers while encouraging clubs to invest in domestic talent.

Stronger focus on youth development

The AIFF has also introduced a long-term academy development plan.

Every IFL club must secure at least a Two-Star AIFF Academy Accreditation before the 2027-28 season. In addition, all clubs have committed to upgrading their academies to Three-Star Accreditation by 2030, with the objective of strengthening grassroots football and creating a sustainable pathway for young Indian players.
