Is the NBA launching a Europe-based NBA league? Here’s what the reports say

The NBA targets a 2027 Europe-based league, blending elite clubs and new teams amid rising continental popularity

The NBA is all set to launch its European basketball league and they have already had a discussion about that. The NBA commissioner Adam Silver has confirmed that football clubs like Real Madrid and Berlin, and several other clubs have shown interest. The officials have made a plan to expand the league, they are expecting to start the league in 2027.

The commissioner has confirmed that the idea has been proposed to mix established European teams with new ones, with the league initially being funded by the selected member clubs.

How will the tournament be structured?

A BBC report has suggested that a league of 16 teams can be shaped in which there will be 10-12 regular teams and there will be a few open spots.

The decision to introduce a new tournament has been made because of the rising popularity of the NBA in Europe and the NBA has planned to place six NBA matches of the American League in four different cities in Europe. The cities will be London, Manchester, Berlin and Paris.

"We're trying to find the best combination of the old and the new; the tradition and the innovation," said Silver. He also added, "the model of the type of club that we would like to see in a potential European league".

Adam Silver clarified that discussions with Real Madrid, a EuroLeague powerhouse widely regarded as one of Europe’s most storied basketball clubs, were largely exploratory in nature and focused on information gathering. However, he confirmed that more concrete talks had taken place with another European team, Alba Berlin, whose Uber Arena served as the venue for the NBA game.
