The Houston Texans produced a dominant defensive performance to defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers 30-6 in the AFC Wild Card round, securing a convincing road playoff victory and progressing to the divisional stage of the NFL postseason.

The result marked a historic moment for Houston, who registered their first away playoff win, while Pittsburgh’s season ended with another early postseason exit.

Defense sets the tone early

Houston’s defense dictated the contest from the opening quarter, limiting the Steelers to minimal offensive production and forcing repeated mistakes. Pittsburgh struggled to establish rhythm, managing fewer than 200 total yards as pressure from the Texans’ front disrupted both the passing and running game.

The Texans capitalised decisively on turnovers, with defensive touchdowns shifting momentum firmly in their favour during the second half. A fumble return and a pick-six in the final quarter broke the game open and effectively ended any hopes of a Steelers comeback.

Stroud steady amid turnovers

Quarterback C.J. Stroud delivered a mixed but ultimately effective performance for Houston. While he accounted for a touchdown pass and moved the offense efficiently at key moments, he was also responsible for multiple turnovers.

Despite those errors, Stroud’s composure in critical situations helped Houston maintain control, including a second-quarter touchdown throw that extended the Texans’ advantage and settled early nerves.

Ground game closes out victory

Houston’s rushing attack played a significant role in closing out the game. Consistent gains on the ground allowed the Texans to dominate time of possession in the second half, keeping their defense fresh and limiting Pittsburgh’s opportunities.

A late rushing touchdown underlined Houston’s control as the visitors comfortably saw out the contests.

For Pittsburgh, the defeat extended a difficult playoff trend, with offensive inefficiency once again proving costly. Despite a strong regular season, the Steelers were unable to translate that form into postseason success, raising further questions about their playoff consistency.

Houston will now advance with confidence into the divisional round, buoyed by a defense that once again demonstrated its ability to decide games on the biggest stage.
