Kolkata hosts FIDE-rated chess tournament with 493 players from four countries

A five-day FIDE-rated international chess tournament in Kolkata saw 493 players from four countries compete for ₹6 lakh in prize money, with Kaustav Kundu emerging champion.

A FIDE-rated chess tournament was organised in Kolkata with chess players from 18 districts of West Bengal, along with players from multiple states of India and other countries. A total of 493 competitors participated in this tournament. 101 trophies were awarded in this tournament.

This tournament was organised by Mind Game Chess Academy of Sonarpur, Dabaru Chess Academy, and North 24 Parganas District Chess Association, with the cooperation of Eastern Metropolitan Club. It ran from December 26 to 30, 2025. Kaustav Kundu and Saumik Bandyopadhyay became its champion and runner-up, respectively.

In the over-60 category, Swapan Mitra and Kunal Chattopadhyay became champion and runner-up, respectively. A total of 493 competitors from four countries and five federations participated in this chess tournament. Apart from the 18 districts of West Bengal and 15 states of India, competitors were also present from America, Sweden, and Canada. Among the chess players, there were 435 men and 58 women.

Just as there were over-60 competitors here, there were also nearly 300 competitors under-16. The tournament prize money was 6 lakh rupees. Trophies were given to 101 people. The competition was inaugurated by Kolkata Press Club President Snehashis Sur and Eastern Metropolitan Club Sports Department official Sriranjan Sinha. Present at the prize distribution ceremony were State Chess Association President Grandmaster Dibyendu Barua, Bengal Olympic Association President Chandan Raychaudhuri, Benfis Managing Director Srimati Sharmishtha Das, Eastern Metropolitan Club Secretary Sanjeev Ghosh, Sriranjan Sinha, Debashis Barua, Madhurima Sengupta, Dr. Jayanta Sarkar, Asit Baran Chaudhuri, and others.
