A viral video that triggered fears of so-called “zombie drugs” in Bengaluru has been found to be misleading, with city police confirming that no such narcotic was involved in the incident.

The clip, widely circulated on social media, showed a man standing motionless for several minutes, prompting speculation that a dangerous drug had surfaced in the city. However, an investigation by the North-East division police ruled out any such link.

Alcohol-medication mix caused disorientation

According to officials, the man seen in the video has been identified as Rajveer Singh, a lorry driver from Punjab. Police said Singh has a history of substance use and had previously undergone treatment at a de-addiction centre.

On the day of the incident, Singh reportedly consumed alcohol and later took prescribed medication. The combination is believed to have caused temporary disorientation, blurred vision and restricted movement, leaving him standing still for a prolonged period.

As per The Hans India report, Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh said, “The individual was medically examined, and no banned substances were detected,” dismissing claims of “zombie drug” use.

Misinformation triggers panic online

The video quickly gained traction online, fuelling concern about the possible spread of synthetic narcotics. However, police said the situation was misrepresented and urged the public to avoid sharing unverified content. Officials confirmed that the man received medical attention and is stable.

The commissioner also warned that action could be taken against those responsible for recording and circulating the misleading clip, adding that notices may be issued to individuals who amplified the claims without verification.

Zero tolerance on drugs, say authorities

The police made it clear that the authorities take a very strict stance when it comes to drugs in the city. The event, according to government officials, highlights the influence misinformation is exerting on social media platforms.

Unconfirmed claims could trigger hysteria in the community. Authorities have requested residents to contact the police in case of any suspicious activity.
