Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee mounted a strong attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during a public meeting in Purulia's Balarampur College Ground on Monday.
Questions over development, governance
Addressing supporters in the scorching heat of the afternoon, Banerjee questioned the performance of BJP leaders in the region, particularly on basic infrastructure.
"They were in power for 5 years. Purulia has been experiencing a double-engine government since 2019. But what did the people of Balarampur get?" he asked.

The Diamond Harbour MP also raised concerns over train delays, citing specific examples to question governance. "The MP from here, who cannot even ensure the trains run on time, can he bring any development here? BJP means zero warranty," he added.
Focus on local candidate
Banerjee urged voters to support TMC candidate Shantiram Mahato, describing him as rooted in the region and committed to public service. He contrasted this with the BJP candidate, alleging a lack of local connect and accountability.
"Even in this scorching heat, those who have come to bless our candidate have not come just to listen to my political speech but have decided to give victory to Shantiram Mahato from Balarampur. And AITC's victory from here is just a matter of time now," asserted Banerjee during his address.
Welfare schemes and promises
The TMC leader outlined several welfare measures implemented in the constituency. He said around 8,000 families had received assistance under Banglar Bari, while nearly 63,000 women benefited from Lakshmir Bhandar.
He also cited schemes such as Krishak Bandhu, which supported 40,000 farmers, and Yuva Sathi, which reached 28,000 youths. Infrastructure development under Pathashree Rastashree, including roads worth Rs 45 crore, was also highlighted.
"In the last 2 years, around 8,000 families received funds under Banglar Bari, and the Centre has no contribution to this. Around 63,000 women receive Lakshmir Bhandar from this Assembly constituency. BJP is stating that they will give Rs 3,000 to all women if they come to power. But remember, all their promises are fake. They promised Rs 15 lakh each; did anyone get it?" asked Banerjee.
Looking ahead, Banerjee promised expanded welfare initiatives if his party returns to power. These included continued financial support for women, clean drinking water for every household within five years, and regular health camps under a proposed "Duare Chikitsa" programme.
"Our government keeps its promises. Despite the Centre stopping our funds, in various places of Balarampur, water tanks have been constructed," Banerjee stated.
Allegations against BJP
Banerjee accused the BJP of failing to fulfil earlier promises and criticised its handling of economic issues. He pointed to rising prices of essential goods and fuel over the years, questioning the party's claims.
He also raised concerns over issues affecting local communities, including the demand to include the Kurmali language in the Eighth Schedule, alleging inaction by the Centre.
"If you have the courage, bring forth your accounts of development. In Balarampur, there is a BJP MLA, and the MP from Purulia is also from BJP. Let them show what the BJP government has done for Purulia in the last 12 years, and we will bring our report card for the last 15 years.

I promise to defeat you in terms of development," Banerjee asserted.
Call to voters
Closing his address, Banerjee urged voters to deliver a decisive mandate in favour of the TMC. He referenced past electoral margins and called for a stronger showing this time.
"This is not just about giving AITC a victory; it is also about protest and resistance," he said, asking supporters to ensure a significant win in the upcoming polls.
