Kolkata weather: Afternoon storm batters city as IMD issues Red Alert for several districts

After a sweltering morning, Kolkata and several South Bengal districts were hit by heavy rain, thunderstorms and 60 kmph winds as the IMD issued a Red Alert for severe weather.

After enduring a hot and humid morning, Kolkata witnessed a dramatic change in weather on Thursday afternoon as heavy rain, strong winds and frequent lightning swept across the city. Around 2 pm, thick rain-bearing clouds covered the skyline, making it feel more like evening than midday.

The sudden spell brought relief from the oppressive heat but also affected normal life in several parts of the city.

Heavy rain spreads across South Bengal

The weather system was not confined to Kolkata alone. Several districts in South Bengal also came under the impact of heavy rain and thunderstorms.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), scattered thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are likely to continue across the southern districts of West Bengal. A Red Alert has been issued for multiple districts in view of the severe weather conditions.

Rain has already been reported from parts of Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Howrah and Kolkata.

Strong winds and lightning warning

Along with heavy rainfall, frequent lightning has been reported in many areas. Gusty winds are also accompanying the storm, with speeds expected to range between 50 and 60 kmph.

The IMD has advised people in the affected districts to remain cautious as the spell of thunderstorms and rain continues.
