At least five people, including a child, were injured after a firearm carried by a security guard accidentally discharged inside a nationalised bank in the Bidhan Nagar area of Phansidewa block under the Siliguri subdivision on Tuesday.

According to local sources, the bank had a heavy rush of customers shortly after opening hours. During this time, the firearm of a security personnel on duty reportedly slipped and fell to the ground. Moments later, a bullet was discharged, allegedly after ricocheting, causing injuries to several people present inside the bank.
The injured were initially taken to Bidhan Nagar Rural Hospital. As the condition of some victims worsened, they were later referred to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital for advanced treatment.
Police begin probe into accidental firing
Siliguri Subdivision Police Officer Soumajit Roy confirmed that an investigation into the incident has been initiated. Officials are examining how the firearm discharged after falling and whether there was any negligence involved. He said further details would be shared once the inquiry is completed.

The incident triggered panic inside the bank, with customers rushing out in fear following the sudden sound of the gunshot. Security arrangements at the bank are also being reviewed in light of the incident.
