An army personnel has been accused of mentally and physically torturing his wife over dowry demands in Jagacha, Howrah. The accused, identified as Bhim Singh, was arrested by Jagacha police. He was produced before a Howrah court on Wednesday, where the judge remanded him to six days of police custody.
Allegations by the wife
According to police, Bhim Singh met Shashwati Mondal, a resident of the Satashi area in Jagacha, through social media about four years ago. The two later got married. Shashwati alleged that her family gave ₹5 lakh in cash and gold jewellery at the time of marriage. She claimed that after the wedding, she was subjected to physical assault and mental harassment.

Claims of second marriage
Shashwati said she continued to live with Bhim Singh at an Army Medical Camp in Pune despite the abuse. She alleged that her in-laws, who live in Gopalganj, Bihar, never accepted her as Bhim Singh’s wife and never took her to their home.

She further claimed that Bhim Singh's family secretly arranged his second marriage. In April, after seeing photos of the second wedding, she suffered severe mental distress and then approached the Jagacha Police Station.
