Israeli airstrikes on Sunday reportedly hit Gandhi Hospital in northern Tehran, according to Iranian media and international wire reports. The alleged strike comes on the second day of a combined US-Israeli military offensive targeting sites across Iran.
The incident, if confirmed, would mark a significant escalation, as Israel has maintained that its operations are focused on military and nuclear infrastructure.
Patients evacuated amid heavy damage
According to Reuters, patients were evacuated from the hospital following the strike, and the building sustained substantial damage. Iran’s Islamic Students News Agency (ISNA) described the incident as “Zionist-American air strikes” targeting a civilian medical facility. Videos circulating on Iranian outlets showed debris scattered across corridors and wheelchairs overturned, suggesting a chaotic evacuation. Separate reports from Fars News Agency and Mizan News Agency carried similar footage.
The claims have not been independently verified.
Israel says targets are military and nuclear sites
The Israel Defence Forces said its campaign is aimed at degrading Iran’s military capabilities. Brigadier General Effie Defrin, an IDF spokesperson, stated in a briefing that around 100 fighter jets had carried out coordinated strikes on government buildings in Tehran.
According to Israeli officials, the targets included installations linked to Iran’s missile command, air force and internal security forces. The reported damage to a civilian hospital appears to deviate from Israel’s stated focus on military and nuclear infrastructure.

Previous incidents involving medical facilities
The alleged strike on Gandhi Hospital is not the first reported incident involving healthcare facilities during the Israel-Iran conflict. Iranian media, including the Tehran Times, previously cited health ministry officials as saying that a comprehensive health services centre and several ambulances were struck during earlier rounds of unrest.
Reports have also referenced damage to medical facilities in cities such as Kermanshah and southern Tehran in past phases of the conflict.

As hostilities intensify, reports of civilian infrastructure being hit raise concerns over humanitarian impact and the widening scope of the conflict. While Israel maintains its strikes are directed at military and nuclear targets, the alleged damage to Gandhi Hospital underscores the growing risks faced by non-combatant institutions amid the escalating confrontation.
