An Indian-American student was among those killed in a mass shooting at a popular nightlife spot in Austin, Texas, on Sunday, in an attack that authorities are reportedly probing as a potential act of terrorism.

Victims identified

The Austin Police Department identified one of the victims as 21-year-old Savitha Shan and the other as 19-year-old Ryder Harrington. While police have officially confirmed two deaths, several reports said three people were killed and more than a dozen injured, Hindustan Times reported.

The suspect, identified as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne, was shot dead by police after the attack. According to the Associated Press, his clothing bore an Iranian flag design and the words "Property of Allah". Investigators are examining possible motives, though no official conclusion has been announced.

The shooting comes amid heightened tensions between the United States and Iran following the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei over the weekend.

'She was due to graduate in May'

Savitha Shan was a student at the University of Texas. Russ Finney, Assistant Professor at the McCombs School of Business, described her as "one of the superstar students" who had a double major with honours and was due to graduate in May.

"Involved in student organisations - a light in the classroom. Absolutely crushing to lose her," Finney wrote.

Responding to the Austin Police Department's update, he added, "Other students are still in the hospital in very serious conditions - this is a very tough week for our community, the families, and #ATX in general. Thanks for releasing this information."

What happened on Sixth Street?

The attack unfolded at Buford's Backyard Beer Garden on West Sixth Street, an area popular with students and located near the University of Texas campus.
