The United Kingdom has joined coordinated defensive efforts in the Middle East after Israel launched strikes on Iran, with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirming that UK aircraft are actively involved in protecting national interests and regional allies. The announcement signals London’s heightened military posture amid fears of a broader conflict.
UK aircraft deployed in defensive operations
In a televised statement on Saturday, Starmer said British planes “are in the sky today” as part of coordinated regional defensive operations. He clarified that UK forces are operating in a protective capacity, aimed at safeguarding British interests and supporting allies in the region.
The move follows Israeli strikes on Iranian targets, which have sharply escalated tensions and drawn international concern over the possibility of wider military confrontation. Starmer stressed that the UK’s involvement is focused on defence and deterrence rather than offensive action.
Call for restraint and diplomacy
The Prime Minister of UK urged Iran to refrain from launching further strikes and warned against steps that could intensify instability. He emphasised the urgent need to prevent further escalation in a region already grappling with deep political and security challenges.
Starmer also called on Iranian leadership to cease what he described as “violence and oppression” against its own people and to re-engage in diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalation. His remarks underscored Britain’s position that long-term stability will require political dialogue rather than sustained military confrontation.

British defence planners are believed to be working closely with allies, including the United States and regional partners, to monitor threats such as missile launches, drone attacks and potential strikes on shipping routes or military installations.
