US President Donald Trump on Wednesday (January 14) claimed he received credible information that killings in Iran's violent crackdown have ceased and that there was no intention to execute hundreds of thousands of individuals involved in these protests.

"We've been told that the killing in Iran is stopping, it's stopped, it's stopping, and there's no plan for executions or an execution or executions. So I've been told that on good authority, we'll find out about it," Trump said.

Trump cited "very important sources on the other side" and assured that Tehran would longer execute the demonstrators, which he said "a lot of people were talking about for the last couple of days".

"There were supposed to be a lot of executions today and that the executions won’t take place – and we’re going to find out," Trump said at the White House.

"We will watch and see"

When asked about whether the US's military response towards Iran was off the table, Trump indicated that this remains to be seen as he stated, "We're gonna watch and see what the process is, but we were given a very good statement by people that are aware of what's going on."

Before making these remarks, Trump had posted on Truth Social that "help was on its way", and this statement caused many people to speculate that he meant to deliver a strike on the city of Tehran.
