United States President Donald Trump on Thursday said Washington was negotiating with Iran from a “position of pure strength” after the recent peace agreement, claiming that Tehran was now keen to reach a deal with the US.

Speaking during a White House event attended by farmers, Trump defended the American action against Iran and said it had strengthened Washington’s hand in the ongoing talks.

“We knocked the hell out of them, and now we’re negotiating from a position of pure strength, pure strength. They know that," Trump was quoted as saying by News18.

He also suggested that Iran was eager to reach an understanding with the United States. “Iran wants to make a deal with us very badly. We probably will."

The US president once again justified the military action against Iran, saying it was necessary because of concerns over Tehran’s nuclear ambitions.

“We had to act against Iran because its possession of a nuclear weapon means the demise of Israel and the Middle East and endangering the world," he said.

Trump’s remarks come as the United States and Iran continue a 60-day round of negotiations covering Tehran’s nuclear programme, sanctions relief and shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz.

Strait of Hormuz and trade remarks

Addressing concerns over energy supplies, Trump claimed that the Strait of Hormuz remained operational despite tensions in the region.

“The Strait of Hormuz is open and witnessed yesterday the exit of 19 million barrels of oil, the highest figure in its history," he said, per a report by News18..

The strategic waterway, which links the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea, had witnessed disruptions during the conflict after Iran imposed a blockade on the route.

Trump also repeated his claim that Iran could become a market for American agricultural products.

“We have another one, a new market coming up, and that’s called the lovely country of Iran. They’re having a hard time with food and we’re going to be taking some of their money and we’ll spend it and we’re going to be buying wheat, soybeans, and corn, a lot of it," he said.

Iran has since indicated plans to introduce maritime service fees, while the Revolutionary Guards have warned that unauthorised crossings through the strait would be “dealt with”.
