The US Department, in a significant defence development, has approved the possible sale of sustainment support and related equipment for India’s AH-64E Apache helicopters and M777A2 Ultra-Light Howitzer.
The estimated cost of the Apache-related support package stands at USD 198.2 billion, while the proposed deal for the M777A2 howitzers is valued at USD 230 million.
What the proposed deals include
According to the State Department, India has sought a comprehensive package for its Apache fleet. This includes engineering and technical assistance, logistics support from both the US government and contractors, personnel training, and access to technical data and publications.
According to a Hindustan Times report, the request also covers other related elements of logistics and program support to maintain operational readiness.

For the M777A2 howitzers, India has asked for long-term sustainment support. The package includes a range of non-major defence equipment such as ancillary items, spares, repair and return services, technical assistance, and field service support.
Key contractors involved
Major US defence firms, including Boeing and Lockheed Martin, will handle the Apache support services.
For the howitzer support programme, the principal contractor will be BAE Systems, based in Cumbria, UK.
The proposed sales will be conducted through the Foreign Military Sales route. The State Department underlined that the move aligns with broader strategic objectives.
The Department of State said that the proposed sale of helicopters and howitzers will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the US by helping to strengthen the US-Indian strategic relationship.
It further added that it will also help improve the security of a major defence partner, which continues to be an important force for political stability, peace, and economic progress in the Indo-Pacific and South Asia regions.

Impact on regional security
The US maintained that the deals are expected to enhance India’s defence preparedness.
The proposed sales will also be said to improve India's capability to meet current and future threats, strengthen its homeland defence, and deter regional threats. India will have no difficulty absorbing these articles and services into its armed forces.
At the same time, the department noted that the agreements would not disturb the broader military balance in the region. It also ensured that the decision would not affect US defence readiness. The Department of State said the proposed sale is not expected to have any negative impact on US defence preparedness.
