Fuel gets costlier twice in a week; petrol crosses Rs 109 in Kolkata

Petrol and diesel prices were increased again on Tuesday, marking the second hike in less than a week.

Petrol and diesel prices went up again on Tuesday, marking the second hike in less than a week and adding to the burden on consumers already dealing with rising transport and household costs.

According to industry sources cited by PTI, petrol prices in Delhi increased to Rs 98.64 per litre from Rs 97.77 earlier, while diesel rates climbed to Rs 91.58 per litre from Rs 90.67. The latest revision comes just days after fuel prices were raised by Rs 3 per litre on Friday.

Fuel prices rise in Metro cities

The increase was reflected across all major Metro cities, with Kolkata recording the sharpest jump in petrol prices among the four Metros.

In Delhi, petrol became costlier by 87 paise per litre, while diesel prices rose by 91 paise.

Mumbai saw petrol prices increase by 91 paise to Rs 107.59 per litre. Diesel rates in the city also went up by 94 paise, reaching Rs 94.08 per litre.

In Kolkata, petrol prices rose by 96 paise to Rs 109.70 per litre, while diesel prices increased by 94 paise to Rs 96.07 per litre.

Chennai also witnessed another rise in fuel costs. Petrol prices there climbed by 82 paise to Rs 104.49 per litre, while diesel became dearer by 86 paise, taking the rate to Rs 96.11 per litre.

CNG prices also revised

Alongside petrol and diesel, compressed natural gas (CNG) prices were also increased in the Delhi-NCR region on Sunday.

CNG prices were raised by Rs 1 per kg from Sunday, marking the second increase within two days. Following the latest revision, CNG now costs Rs 80.09 per kg in Delhi and Rs 88.70 per kg in Noida and Ghaziabad.

Union minister Kiren Rijiju defended the recent hike in fuel prices and said India had limited the impact on consumers compared to several other countries affected by the West Asia conflict.
