Zohran Mamdani has opposed the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro by the US forces from Caracas. The New York mayor has said he had a word with President Donald Trump, and he registered his opposition to the President himself. Mamdani has called the surprise strike on Venezuela an "act of war," NDTV reported.
What did Mamdani say?
At a press meet, Mamdani said that he "called the president and spoke with him directly to register my opposition to this act," as he answered a question on the capture of the Venezuelan leader and the situation in the South American nation. He added, "I registered my opposition. I made it clear, and we left it at that." However, the NYC mayor did not mention any response from President Trump.
Just two days after Zohran Kwame Mamdani was sworn in as the mayor of New York, the United States launched a surprise attack on Venezuela. The newly appointed mayor was informed on Saturday morning about the capture of Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores, and that the administration had planned to imprison them at a DEA facility in New York.

In a statement, Mamdani said, "Unilaterally attacking a sovereign nation is an act of war and a violation of federal and international law." The statement added, "This blatant pursuit of regime change doesn't just affect those abroad, it directly impacts New Yorkers, including tens of thousands of Venezuelans who call this city home. My focus is their safety and the safety of every New Yorker, and my administration will continue to monitor the situation and issue relevant guidance."
