A video doing rounds on social media has triggered outrage where a Bangladeshi youth leader can be seen talking about the killing of a Hindu cop proudly and also openly threatening law enforcement officials during what he called the July 2024 uprising.

The video was shared on X by Bangladesh' investigative journalist Sahidul Hasan Khokon who identified the boy as a student coordinator from Habiganj district.

In the video, the boy even boasts that during the July movement, they set the Baniachong Police Station on fire. Without any fear or remorse, the boy made a chilling statement while sitting inside the police station and said, "We burned Hindu officer SI Santosh."

New Bangladesh?

Through his post, the journalist goes on to ask, "Where is the law, where is the state? Or has intimidation itself become power? Is this the new Bangladesh?"

Lynching of SI Santosh

On August 5, 2024, SI Santosh Bhabhu was lynched by a mob. He was an officer with the Baniachong Police Station in Habiganj district. Quoting Bangladeshi newspaper 'Desh Rupantar', News 18 said that the violence erupted that evening when the mob attacked Baniachong Police Station hours before then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned.

In self-defense, the SI and other cops opened fire to disperse the mob. Three people were killed on the spot and several were injured. Later that same night, around 1 am, the mob returned and surrounded the police station. When the Army arrived, they allowed them to enter in exchange of Santosh Bhabhu alone.

At around 2.15 am, Santosh Bhabhu was lynched, the report said. His body was left on the road and was later further desecrated by the mob.
