Strong earthquake shakes Mexico City, halts President's press conference

A 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck Mexico on Friday, shaking several states and briefly interrupting President Claudia Sheinbaum's press conference, though no casualties have been reported so far.

Mexico was hit by a strong earthquake on Friday morning, causing panic in several parts of the country. The tremor measured 6.5 on the Richter scale and struck at 7:58 AM local time. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicentre was located about 14.8 kilometres northeast of San Marcos in Guerrero state, at a depth of 35 kilometres.

Strong tremors felt across regions

Apart from Guerrero, strong tremors were felt in Mexico City, Veracruz, and Jalisco. In the capital, tall buildings began to sway, forcing people to rush out onto the streets in fear. So far, no deaths or major damage have been reported, but authorities remain on high alert.

Press conference interrupted

At the time of the quake, President Claudia Sheinbaum was addressing a live press conference at the National Palace in Mexico City. The building began shaking, and earthquake sirens went off, forcing the event to be stopped midway. Security personnel quickly escorted the President to a safe area.

Videos from the scene showed President Sheinbaum staying calm during the incident, even as panic spread among journalists present. Experts have warned that the region could see more aftershocks due to the movement of the Caribbean Plate. Alerts have also been issued in countries including Ecuador, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, and Colombia.
