Rain after a prolonged drought. That very rain proved fatal for the residents of Afghanistan. Snowfall and torrential rains have created flash flood conditions there. According to sources from Afghanistan's disaster management authority, at least 17 people are feared dead so far due to the flash floods. Eleven people have been seriously injured.

Afghanistan has been devastated by successive natural disasters. In August 2025, a devastating earthquake struck the provinces of Nangarhar and Kunar near the Pakistan border. The magnitude was 6.0 on the Richter scale. More than 1,400 people died in that earthquake.

Additionally, there was virtually no rainfall in Afghanistan for almost the entire past year. Snowfall began in the mountainous regions at the end of the year. Alongside this, torrential rains started a few days ago. The sudden heavy rainfall has created flood conditions in Afghanistan's Herat province.

Mohammad Yusuf Saidi, spokesperson for the Herat provincial government, claimed that among the 17 people killed in the recent floods, five were members of the same family. That family was from the Kabkan area of Herat. The disaster management authority believes they died when their roof collapsed due to heavy rain. It has been reported that two children are among the dead.

Mohammad Yousuf Hammad, spokesperson for Afghanistan's National Disaster Management Authority, said that a total of 17 people have died from Monday until now.

Normal life has been disrupted due to flash floods. Many families' livestock have been swept away by the floodwaters. Hammad reported that approximately 1,800 families have been affected.
