A group of protesters vandalised and torched the building of the esteemed cultural organisation 'Chhayanaut' in Dhaka's Dhanmondi early on Friday as violence spread across the country following the death of 'Inqilab Mancha' leader Sharif Osman Hadi. "The incident occurred around 2:15 am," Khaleda Yasmin, duty officer at the Fire Service and Civil Defence Headquarters control room, told Dhaka Tribune.
What is Chhayanaut?
'Chhayanaut' is one of Bangladesh's most respected cultural organisations, founded in 1961 in Dhaka by a group of artists and intellectuals to promote Bengali music, culture, and secular values at a time when such expression faced political pressure in then East Pakistan. From its early years, 'Chhayanaut' became a centre for Rabindra Sangeet, Nazrul Geeti, and classical music.

During the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, 'Chhayanaut' played a symbolic and moral role by keeping Bengali cultural identity alive, using music and performances to inspire resistance and solidarity against oppression. Its commitment to cultural freedom made it an enduring emblem of the nation's struggle for identity.
One of Chhayanaut's most prominent figures was Sanjida Khatun, a co-founder and lifelong pillar of the organisation. A renowned cultural activist, musicologist, and Rabindra Sangeet exponent, she played a vital role in shaping Chhayanaut's vision and legacy. In recognition of her immense contribution to culture and music, Sanjida Khatun was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India.

Chhayanaut under attack
The 'Chhayanaut' office in Dhanmondi was vandalised and set on fire by protesters, leaving behind charred furniture and damaged musical instruments, showing the scale of the violence. The organisation said several rare items, including books, instruments, and cultural artefacts, were destroyed, while many students present during the attack were left in tears, ANI reported.
Laisa Ahmed, General Secretary of 'Chhayanaut' told ANI, "We condemn this incident and demand a thorough investigation. It's not possible to say much right now, in such a short time; there has been considerable damage. You have witnessed it yourselves. It's not possible to state that in financial terms. Some rare books may have been lost. However, we are so distressed that we are not providing any details at this time. But we demand a proper investigation into this matter."
