Devastating fire erupts at Hong Kong housing complex leaving many trapped, Level 4 alarm issued

These eight high-rises contain approximately 2,000 apartments.

A devastating fire broke out at a multi-storey housing complex in Hong Kong. On Wednesday afternoon, the fire spread to multiple high-rise buildings at the Wang Fuk Court residential complex located in the Tai Po area of northern Hong Kong. The surrounding area was engulfed by roaring flames and thick black smoke. As per latest reports, the fire has been largely brought under control. So far, it has been reported that two residents have been seriously burnt in the blaze and several firefighters have also been injured.

The intensity of the fire was so severe that Hong Kong authorities declared it as a 'Level 4 alarm'. This is the second-highest fire alert in their country.

According to reports from local media, bamboo scaffolding had been erected outside the residential buildings for renovation work. It can be said that the fire quickly spread to other upper floors through this scaffolding.

It is still not confirmed exactly how many people are trapped inside the buildings. Authorities have not released any numbers, but it has been reported that the number is not insignificant.

According to a Reuters report, the Wang Fuk Court residential complex consists of eight blocks. These eight high-rises contain approximately 2,000 apartments. Hong Kong's emergency services department is struggling to carry out rescue operations in this massive residential complex.

A major section of Tai Po Highway has been closed due to the fire. The incident has created severe traffic congestion in the area.

Police and the fire brigade are continuing efforts to rescue trapped people.
