Bangladesh student leader Sharif Osman Hadi's remains to reach Dhaka today evening, final rites on Saturday

The body of slain student leader Sharif Osman Hadi will return to Dhaka on Friday, as protests over his killing rock the capital of Bangladesh.

The mortal remains of the slain Bangladeshi student leader Sharif Osman Hadi will reach Dhaka on Friday. After being shot last Friday, December 12, while travelling by a rickshaw in Dhaka's Bijoy Nagar area, the 'Inquilab Mancha' leader was taken to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, after which he was flown to Singapore for treatment.

He passed away yesterday, December 18. His death has sparked widespread protests across the capital of Bangladesh. Media offices have been subjected to vandalism and arson. Hadi's family will depart from Singapore with his remains at 3:50 PM today, and his final rites will be held at Dhaka's Manik Mia Avenue on Saturday.

Who was Sharif Osman Hadi?

Sharif Osman Hadi, a 21-year-old Bangladeshi student leader and a prominent face of the 2024 student uprising, died in Singapore on Thursday after succumbing to gunshot injuries sustained in Dhaka on December 12. He had been flown from Bangladesh for specialised treatment.

Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Hadi died on December 18, 2025, despite intensive care at the Neurosurgical ICU of Singapore General Hospital, and authorities are coordinating with the Bangladesh High Commission for the repatriation of his body to Dhaka.

Investigation underway, Dhaka up in flames

Bangladesh police have launched a manhunt for Hadi's killers and announced a reward of 50 lakh BDT for information leading to their arrest, assuring full confidentiality for informants.

Following news of his death, unrest erupted across several parts of Bangladesh, including Dhaka. The offices of leading newspapers 'Prothom Alo' and 'The Daily Star' were attacked, vandalised, and set on fire, forcing both publications to suspend operations on Friday.
