The Jammu and Kashmir government is set to significantly strengthen its public transport network by adding 200 new smart electric buses to its existing fleet. The move comes amid rising passenger demand for clean and efficient transport, with officials saying the expanded fleet will improve connectivity in urban centres while also reaching rural areas and popular tourist destinations.
The procurement process is currently in its final stages, and the buses are expected to begin operating in Jammu and Srinagar over the next few months. Officials believe the new fleet will help modernise public transport while supporting the Union Territory's long-term sustainability goals.
More buses to improve connectivity
According to NDTV, the expansion will nearly double the existing fleet of electric buses operating in Jammu and Srinagar. According to government officials, the additional buses will not remain limited to city routes but will gradually be introduced on services connecting rural regions and key tourist locations.
Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani said the initiative reflects the government's commitment to building an efficient and environmentally friendly transport system. He added that the ongoing procurement process is progressing as planned and will substantially strengthen public mobility across the region.
The electric buses are equipped with modern passenger amenities, including air conditioning, GPS tracking and smart ticketing systems, features that have already made the existing fleet popular among commuters.

Women to continue travelling free
According to NDTV, the government has confirmed that the free bus travel scheme for women will continue even after the new buses are introduced. Officials acknowledged that the policy has affected transport revenues but maintained that its social impact far outweighs the financial cost.
Transport Department Secretary Avny Lavasa said the initiative should be viewed as a welfare measure rather than a commercial service. She noted that improved mobility for women has generated significant social benefits that cannot be measured solely through revenue figures.
The free travel scheme has witnessed a strong public response since its introduction and remains one of the key reasons behind the increasing demand for government-run bus services.

Push towards greener public transport
According to NDTV, the latest induction is part of Jammu and Kashmir's broader effort to replace conventional buses with electric alternatives. As part of the Smart City programme, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has already approved 100 electric buses each for Srinagar and Jammu.
Officials said the Jammu and Kashmir State Road Transport Corporation is also pursuing a separate proposal to procure additional electric buses beyond those sanctioned under the central scheme.
Since their introduction in 2023, electric buses have become an important component of public transport in both cities. The upcoming fleet is expected to reduce dependence on conventional fuel-powered buses further while offering cleaner, safer and more reliable travel for residents and visitors alike.
