A fresh political controversy has unfolded in West Bengal after a police case was registered against AIJUP chief and Nayda MLA Humayun Kabir over remarks made during a public gathering in Murshidabad. The action came after the Bharatiya Janata Party's youth wing submitted a written complaint, alleging that Kabir had publicly issued threats against BJP leaders.

The controversy stems from a speech delivered by Kabir in Rejinagar, where he criticised the BJP's political activities in Murshidabad and warned of consequences if the party continued what he described as aggressive political behaviour. A video of the speech soon circulated widely on social media, drawing sharp criticism from the BJP.

Viral speech triggers political storm

According to NDTV, in the widely circulated video, Humayun Kabir is heard claiming that local BJP leaders continue to behave as though they are elected representatives despite losing the Assembly election. He specifically referred to BJP candidate Anamika Ghosh, whom he defeated in the polls, while accusing the party of displaying political arrogance in the district.

Kabir also addressed Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, demanding that the BJP rein in its local leadership. During the speech, he said that if he mobilised his supporters, the BJP would be unable to maintain its organisational presence in Murshidabad.

The BJP alleged that these remarks amounted to an open threat of violence and sought legal action against the MLA.

BJP files complaint, police register case

According to NDTV, following the circulation of the video, BJP youth leaders lodged a formal complaint, accusing Kabir of making inflammatory statements capable of disturbing public peace. Based on the complaint, the police registered a case and initiated an inquiry into the matter.

The development has intensified political tensions in Murshidabad, where competition between regional parties and the BJP has remained sharp in recent years.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the specific sections under which the case has been registered, but the investigation is expected to examine both the speech and the circumstances surrounding the public meeting.

Kabir defends his remarks

According to NDTV, reacting to the FIR, Humayun Kabir questioned why he should remain silent when, according to him, BJP leaders regularly make derogatory statements against him. He maintained that he was responding politically to repeated attacks from the opposition.

The AIJUP leader has not indicated any intention to retract his remarks, while the BJP continues to demand strict legal action, arguing that elected representatives should refrain from using language that could encourage political violence.

The case is likely to add another flashpoint to the already heated political atmosphere in West Bengal, where exchanges between ruling and opposition leaders frequently spill into legal and public confrontations.
