Africa has achieved its greatest-ever FIFA World Cup performance after nine of its 10 representatives advanced to the Round of 32 at the 2026 edition. The historic feat marks the first time so many African teams have reached the knockout stage, highlighting the continent’s growing strength on the global football stage.

DR Congo and Algeria seal qualification

The final two qualification spots were secured on the last day of the group stage. DR Congo defeated Uzbekistan 3-1 in a must-win clash to book its place in the knockouts, while Algeria earned qualification after a thrilling 3-3 draw against Austria.

The tournament has also produced several milestones. DR Congo reached the knockout stage for the first time in its history, more than 50 years after its only previous World Cup appearance as Zaire in 1974. South Africa also progressed beyond the group stage for the first time, while tournament debutants Cape Verde enjoyed a memorable campaign by advancing to the knockouts.

Africa sets a new World Cup benchmark

The expanded 48-team World Cup has given African nations more opportunities, but the teams have made the most of them with disciplined performances and impressive results against strong opposition.

With nine teams still in contention, Africa will now look to carry its momentum into the knockout rounds. The record-breaking group-stage performance has already secured a place in World Cup history, while raising hopes that one of the continent’s representatives can make a deep run and challenge for the biggest prize in international football.
