Trinamool Congress (TMC) chairperson Mamata Banerjee updated her X (formerly Twitter) profile on Friday, prompting fresh political discussion following the change of government in West Bengal.
Banerjee updated her bio from "Honourable Chief Minister, West Bengal" to "Founder Chairperson All India Trinamool Congress. Chief Minister of West Bengal (15th, 16th and 17th Vidhan Sabha)".
End of a long political run
Banerjee came to power in 2011 after ending the Left Front’s 34-year rule in the state and went on to lead the Trinamool Congress to three consecutive Assembly victories.
Over the years, she emerged as one of the BJP's strongest political opponents at the national level. However, the 2026 Assembly results marked a major setback for the party, with the BJP making gains in several regions long considered TMC strongholds.
Even after the election results were declared, Banerjee did immediately stepped down from office. She maintained that constitutional procedures linked to government formation had to be completed before the transition of power.

Kolkata Police unfollows Mamata Banerjee
The political transition also appeared to reflect on social media activity linked to state institutions.
Following the BJP's victory, the official X handle of Kolkata Police reportedly unfollowed Mamata Banerjee, TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and several others.
The account now follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, along with the official handles of the PMO and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The developments also coincided with the withdrawal of additional security arrangements from the Trinamool Congress headquarters and residences of several party leaders across Kolkata.
