Banks across several states in India remain closed today, Thursday, May 28, 2026, on the occasion of Bakrid/Eid al-Adha. Since the festival is observed as a gazetted holiday, public sector offices, government institutions and many banking services at the branch level are shut in multiple regions.

The holiday schedule, however, differs from state to state depending on local observance and moon sighting.

Centre revises Eid holiday date

The Central government earlier announced May 27 as the holiday for Id-ul-Zuha (Bakrid), but later revised the date to May 28.

In a statement issued on May 22, the personnel ministry said, “Central government administrative offices located at Delhi/New Delhi shall remain closed on 28th May, 2026, on account of Id-ul-Zuha (Bakrid) (in place of 27th May, 2026),” it said in a statement.

Following the revised notification, central government offices in Delhi and several other regions remain shut today.

Why bank holidays differ across states

Bakrid holidays are not observed uniformly across the country. The exact holiday date may vary depending on factors such as moon sighting, regional customs and state government announcements.

While many states are observing the holiday on May 28, some regions mark the occasion on May 27 instead. Meanwhile, banks in Jammu and Srinagar remained closed earlier in observance of Bakri Eid (Id-Ul-Zuha).

Customers are advised to check the state-wise bank holiday calendar before planning branch visits.

The next scheduled bank holiday in May falls on Sunday, May 31.
