SIH 2025: IIT Kharagpur set to host grand finale during platinum jubilee

IIT Kharagpur will host the Smart India Hackathon 2025 Hardware Finale from December 8–12, Hindustan Times reported. The event coincides with the institute’s platinum jubilee.

IIT Kharagpur on Sunday announced that it will host the grand finale of the Smart India Hackathon (SIH) 2025 – Hardware Edition from December 8 to 12, Hindustan Times reported.

The event holds added significance as it coincides with the institute’s platinum jubilee year, marking 75 years of its contribution to technological research, innovation and nation-building, an IIT Kharagpur spokesperson said.

Record participation marks SIH 2025

According to the Hindustan Times report, the Smart India Hackathon launched in 2017 and conducted by the Ministry of Education’s Innovation Cell (MIC) along with the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has grown into one of the largest open innovation platforms globally. It enables higher-education students to solve real-world challenges posed by ministries, government bodies, industries and NGOs.

The initiative continues under the patronage of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Union MoS Education Sukanta Majumdar, Education Secretary Vineet Joshi and AICTE Chairman Prof TG Sitharam are co-patrons. The Prime Minister is expected to inaugurate the event virtually.

This year’s edition saw 72,165 idea submissions, 68,766 student teams, and 271 problem statements sourced from ministries, PSUs, corporate organisations and industry partners. At the institutional level, 2,587 higher-education institutions, 1,42,715 teams and 8,26,635 students participated in internal hackathons making it one of the most inclusive editions so far.

“As the institute celebrates its historic 75th year, the SIH 2025 Grand Finale stands as a testament to IIT Kharagpur’s enduring mission—where technology meets purpose, and innovation fuels national aspirations,” the spokesperson said, as quoted by Hindustan Times.

IIT Kharagpur Director Prof. Suman Chakraborty said, “Hosting the Grand Finale of Smart India Hackathon 2025 during IIT Kharagpur’s historic Platinum Jubilee is both an honour and a reaffirmation of our commitment to nation-building. SIH embodies the spirit of young India which is fearless in ideas, firm in purpose, and fired by innovation.”
