The first trailer for The Odyssey, directed by Christopher Nolan, is finally out. Clocking in at just under two minutes, the trailer teasing an epic journey defined as much by silence and suffering as by heroism.

The trailer stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, the legendary Greek hero, who struggles to return home after the brutal Trojan War. The trailer suggests that survival on the battlefield was only the beginning. Odysseus and his men, having witnessed torture, death and unspeakable horrors, now face a journey that is no less punishing.

Nolan’s minimalism is on full display; there is little dialogue, and almost no exposition. Instead, the trailer relies on ambient sound, fleeting visuals and a sense of foreboding.

Joining Damon is Anne Hathaway, who plays Penelope, Odysseus’ long-waiting wife, and Tom Holland as their son Telemachus. The cast also includes Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, and several others in yet-undisclosed roles, adding to the sense of mystery around the project.

Fan reactions have been intense

“My theatre just kicked me out for being seated too early to see this movie,” read one comment on YouTube.

“Props to Nolan for hiring real-life giants,” another wrote.

“Odysseus: ‘No one could stand between my men and home.’ Poseidon: ‘Wanna bet?’” one wrote.

The Odyssey marks Nolan’s first film since Oppenheimer, which earned him the Academy Award for Best Director and starred Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer. Expectations, understandably, are sky-high.

What’s ‘The Odyssey’ all about?

Based on Homer’s ancient epic, The Odyssey chronicles a hero’s perilous voyage home, battling monsters, temptation and fate through wit rather than brute force. The story has been adapted many times before, most notably in Mario Camerini’s 1954 film Ulysses, starring Kirk Douglas, and the Coen Brothers' 2000 film O Brother, Where Art Thou?.

Nolan’s The Odyssey is slated to hit you nearby big screens by Universal on July 17, 2026.
